On July 20th a wonderful new cable connecting NZ and Australia to the world went live. We are no longer hidden away with the new cable providing ten times the current capacity.
It is 15,000 km of fibre optic deep-sea cable linking Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific and the United States.
The new cable also provides greater resilience by providing an additional physical data link to the rest of the world, as it takes a different route to existing cables.
Hopefully, this will support economic growth and opportunities in NZ, to correct NZ’s lacklustre productivity (OECD report) performance. It must help as we become more connected I believe.
