Technology wonders DURING covid-19
“Do the hard jobs first. Easy jobs will take care of themselves.”
A nursing home in England is helping its elderly to stay calm and carry on amidst the COVID-19 pandemic with the help of Google Home devices.
One 92-year old, John Winward, said that talking to his device seemed strange at first but now the ability to do things like ask for a joke, or get help on the crossword, was helping him maintain his sanity and enjoy his life more.
Despite the difficulty of adjusting and adapting to such technological wonders, these AI-powered speaking assistants offer an immediate alternative to human company. It might take a little more time and effort for the elderly to get used to voice technologies, but this form of interaction is proven to improve the life of those living alone.
Studies show that loneliness kills people, and according to Stephen Buckley, Head of Information at Mind, the UK’s largest mental health charity, AI might offer a solution. “We know that feeling lonely can contribute to poor mental health. If this is caused by a lack of social contact with others, an AI service might be helpful, particularly for those of us who are unable to make new social connections or need to stay in social isolation.”
For Winward, having his AI assistant is like having a friend who is always there for him. As the technology becomes more and more sophisticated, we can expect the benefits of using virtual assistants to only increase as we navigate this pandemic.
